The Disability Tax Credit in Nova Scotia
How the credit works alongside the Disability Support Program.
One credit, the same rules in every province
The rules to qualify are the same in Nova Scotia as anywhere in Canada: a severe and prolonged impairment, certified by a medical practitioner. What differs is the value, because Nova Scotia adds its own disability amount on the provincial part of your return.
Disability Support Program (DSP)
Nova Scotia’s Disability Support Program serves people with intellectual disabilities, long-term mental illness and physical disabilities, with supports that range from help at home to community living options.
- Supports include day programs, respite, independent living support and community-based living options.
- The Flex program offers self-directed funding for eligible adults who live with family or on their own.
- Participants receive a Standard Household Rate for basic needs. For a single adult who rents or owns, it is $1,022 a month, with extra help available for special needs.

How this connects to the DTC
The Disability Support Program and the Disability Tax Credit are separate. The DTC is approved by the CRA and can be claimed back up to 10 years, so people in the program may still be owed a significant refund.
