How the credit works alongside BC’s PWD designation.
One credit, the same rules in every province
The rules to qualify are the same in British Columbia as anywhere in Canada: a severe and prolonged impairment, certified by a medical practitioner. What differs is the value, because British Columbia adds its own disability amount on the provincial part of your return.
BC Disability Assistance (PWD designation)
British Columbia provides disability assistance to people who meet the province’s income and asset tests. A formal Persons with Disabilities (PWD) designation affects how much support you receive and which benefits you can access.
- Up to $1,483.50 a month for a single person (rates as of December 2025).
- Recipients can earn up to an annual exemption amount from work without losing benefits.
- Supplements may be available for health needs, dental, optical and a bus pass.
- To apply, contact a local office or call 1-866-866-0800.

How this connects to the DTC
PWD designation and the Disability Tax Credit are assessed separately: one by the province, the other by the CRA. Many British Columbians with PWD designation have never applied for the DTC and may be owed years of refunds.
